Paris
A disastrous terror attack in Paris no one could have predicted which unfortunately coincided with our school photography trip.
Although having to staying in lockdown at our hotel for most of the trip, on our first evening we still managed to view the city from the Montparnasse and explore the area in its street lit splendour.
After the attacks we were limited in what we could go out and photograph, however within the constraints of the hotel we were still able to respond to a task titled 'Traces'. In this project we explored what is left behind from object or person that mark their existence. With hotels constantly having guests checking in and out, it raised curiosity to look for any clues documenting this coming and going; some more disguised than others.
Below is a short video I created exploring some of these traces alongside images from our first evening out. I wrote a series of short poems for each photograph expressing my thoughts towards the whole trip for I found it easier to narrate my feelings with stanzas moreover paragraphs. Furthermore I composed a backing instrumental track to tie the images and words together.

Throughout the duration of the trip I filled out a small sketch book, adding collage when we returned home.
With it being a unique experience to say the least, I found this was an opportunity to experiment with some playful assemblage work documenting the different pieces of emotion and value this trip had combined.

Knowing the events that would happen (yet remaining safe and unharmed) I would relive the trip all over again.
Not only did it deliver an emotional transformation, it brought those on the trip a lot closer, evolving relationships and bringing our creative capabilites to life. We were still able to create art from tragedy, a response to fear and a reflex towards the unknown.
Art can heal repair and join people together, transforming perspective and uniting those affected from such abhorrent incidents.
